An engine that plays out the confrontation
Most simulations in this genre roll a number against a rating and consult a table. This one resolves the at-bat one pitch at a time, and publishes how.
Thirty-three inputs, one pitch
Eighteen of them choose which pitch gets thrown: the count, his real repertoire and how he likes to use it, what this hitter does to that pitch family, his fatigue, how many times he has already faced this lineup, his pitching coach, and the leverage of the moment, which is itself computed from eight things including the inning, the outs, all three bases and both scores. Thirteen more decide what the pitch physically does. Then the catcher can steal or lose a strike, and the park gets an opinion.
Twelve pitch types that behave differently
Four-seamer, sinker, cutter, slider, curve, knuckle-curve, screwball, change, splitter, forkball, circle change, knuckleball. Each carries its own velocity band and its own vertical and horizontal break, so a sinker sinks and a knuckleball is genuinely unpredictable. Stuff sets the velocity, movement sets the break, command sets how far it scatters from the target, and the spread between pinpoint and wild is roughly four to one.
Contact modeled the way it is measured
Every ball in play carries an exit velocity, a launch angle, a spray angle, a distance and a hang time. Hard-hit is 95 miles an hour because that is the definition, not a knob. The model is calibrated against roughly 1.1 million real batted balls from 2015 to 2024, and a dedicated check refuses to build a league at all if what comes out does not resemble what went in.
Nine fielders who are standing somewhere
Defense is not a team rating nudging a batting average. Nine fielders occupy real coordinates and each has his own range, arm and error. A ball in the 5.5 hole is an out to a rangy shortstop and a single to a statue. A gapper one center fielder cuts off for a double, another lets roll for a triple.
The park and the weather are not decoration
Every ballpark carries its own outfield distance and wall height in seven directions, its own surface, and whether it is open, domed or retractable, with hand-specific effects so it does not treat a lefty and a righty identically. Twelve months of that city's real climate sit on top, so the ball carries differently in July than in April.
